About
conscious print
Why do people choose print?
It’s in the room, even when you can’t be… It’s permanent.
It’s credible. In a world of fake news and digital overload, there’s connection, trust and a pleasingly slow thought process that goes into print*
Reading print is more focused – free from pop-ups and notifications – leading to deeper engagement
It’s tactile – and smells great!
Print remains a cultural touchstone, preserving ideas and offering nostalgia
And, all the science tells us, we’re much more inclined to remember things we’ve read in print, versus online**
We work hard to make sure that our print is consciously created – that we print the right number of copies, for the right audience, to reduce waste.
We’ve done stacks of research into our impact, and carbon footprint. We make sure that:
Our FSC-accredited paper means that forests in Europe are actually growing***
Paper and printing is one of the lowest industrial emitters of greenhouse gases – less than 1% of all EU greenhouse gas emissions (By contrast, the ICT industry accounts for around 2.5-3% of global greenhouse gas emissions and this is predicted to rise to 14% by 2040.)
At the same time, we know that 13% of global greenhouse gases come from transport. We aim to come up with creative ways of distributing products for each project – but we also know this is an area for improvement and innovation.
A study from Two Sides shows that 72% of consumers prefer to read printed books; 72% also prefer to read magazines over online, and 55% prefer newspapers over digital options.
“Young consumers are very aware that magazine publishing doesn’t follow the same rules as social media and blogging, where speed trumps fact-checking, editing, and refining.”

* The 2018 Ofcom News Consumption Survey found that magazines are the UK’s most trusted source of news across all generations. And, even though they grew up with technology, the average millennial or Gen Zedder will still read magazines for about an hour every week, according to Reuters.
** Researchers at the University of Stavanger in Norway found that students who read texts in print scored significantly better on a reading comprehension test than students who read the texts digitally.
*** A 2019 survey revealed that 59% of European consumers believe forests are shrinking. Yet, since 2000, 59 million hectares of forests have been regenerated – an area the size of France – capturing 5.9 gigatonnes of carbon, research by NGO Trillion Trees reveals.
