CELEBRATING WOMEN’S STORIES, VOICES AND CONNECTION – IN EVERY LANGUAGE…

That’s the idea behind Women in Translation: a community for women who love reading, built around the richness of literature from across the globe. Whether it’s written in French, Ukrainian, Greek or Arabic, or reaches us through English translation, every story has a voice worth hearing.

Women in Translation is an annual global literary celebration held every August, founded by blogger Meytal Radzinski in 2014. It aims is to highlight women writers and translators in a publishing world that heavily favours male authors in translated fiction.

This August, we’re getting involved too – online and with our local Liverpool community.

An online book club, all August long

Wherever you are in the Liverpool City Region (or beyond), you’ll be able to join in, share your reading and connect with women who love books as much as you do.

Across the month, we’ll be:

  • Sharing books translated into English, alongside some of our own favourites translated from English into other languages

  • Highlighting favourite reads recommended by our community

  • Celebrating authors and the richness of translated literature more broadly

It’s part of a much bigger, international celebration of women's writing: a chance to connect with readers from across the world, explore what gets lost and found in translation and amplify voices that deserve a wider audience.

Why it matters

Reading together is about more than the books themselves. This project exists to:

  • Reduce social isolation, by building meaningful local and global connections

  • Foster empathy, through diverse perspectives and stories

  • Strengthen community cohesion, bringing together women from different backgrounds

  • Support wellbeing, through cultural engagement that's good for the mind

  • Develop skills in discussion, communication and literary analysis

  • Celebrate diversity, amplifying intersectional voices in literature

  • Encourage creativity, inspiring storytelling, writing and self-expression

Real world surprises

While the book club lives online, we haven’t given up on getting out and about. Expect a few real-world surprises along the way – keep an eye on our channels throughout August so you don’t miss out.
